SustainUS is an entirely youth-led nonprofit building power with movements for justice and sustainability. We especially welcome applications from People of Color, women, LGBTQ persons, differently-abled people, and working class people.


Communications & Media Coordinator

We are thrilled to announce that SustainUS is searching for a passionate young communicator to join our leadership team as Communications & Media Coordinator! This is a one-year, unpaid volunteer position. It’s a vital role for a team that is critical to maintain regular, meaningful contact with members, donors, and the broader public. The Communications & Media Team is core to our work supporting young people across the US to amplify stories from communities building power at the frontlines of environmental and climate injustice.

Please consider applying if you’re:

  • A resident of the United States for at least 6 months, or a US citizen;
  • 18 or over, and 27 or younger
  • Passionate about and experienced in wielding communications and media to support community-building and strategic political organizing with youth movements for justice & sustainability
  • Available 3-5 hours per week
  • An effective communicator who checks email and phone regularly
  • Interested in developing narratives and creative pieces
  • Committed to cultivating explicitly anti-racist and feminist spaces for working together, building power with most-affected people and communities, and engaging self-transformation in pursuit of collective liberation.

Responsibilities:

  • Help coordinate a group of young people to form a Communications and Media Team that collectively:
    • Writes and sends regular emails to the SustainUS list (communicates the “State of SustainUS” to Members and the public)
    • Oversees SustainUS’s social media game
    • Maintains our press list
    • Communicates regularly with SustainUS leadership and Executive Coordinator
    • Supports SustainUS members and programs to build communications skills and get pieces published
    • Keeps an eye out for new media and storytelling opportunities
  • The Coordinator Role is primarily about accountability. This does not limit the coordinator from taking up different roles within the Team, but the Coordinator is responsible for the following:
    • Scheduling team meetings
    • Follow up (commitment & reminders about meetings, tasks, etc.)
    • Tracking deadlines and holding people accountable to them
    • Holding next steps
    • Timekeeping for meetings
    • Identifying someone to represent the Team on SustainUS leadership calls

Operations Coordinator

We are thrilled to announce that SustainUS is searching for an Operations Coordinator! This is a one-year, unpaid volunteer position. The Operations Coordinator works with SustainUS leadership and our Board of Directors to ensure that our legal and financial compliance is in order. The Operations Coordinator coordinates the work of the Operations Team, consisting of the Tech + Digital Lead, the Treasurer, and the Development Lead. The Operations Coordinator ensures that responsibilities are held and that support is adequate for these leaders.

  • 18 or over, and 27 or younger;
  • Passionate about and with a special knack for operational logistics, nonprofit management, working with numbers, and translating visionary goals into pragmatic action steps;
  • Available 4-5+ hours per week
  • An effective communicator who checks email and phone regularly
  • Interested in supporting the organization to function and develop operations skills
  • Committed to cultivating explicitly anti-racist and feminist spaces for working together, building power with most affected people and communities, and engaging self-transformation in pursuit of collective liberation.

Responsibilities:

  • Help coordinate a group of young people to form an Operations Team that collectively forms an operational backbone to support community-building and strategic political organizing with youth movements for justice & sustainability;
  • Work with the Board of Directors, whose members provide support to the Operations Team
  • Work with the Executive Coordinator to coordinate conversations around compensation and role transitions with active participation and feedback from SustainUS leadership;
  • Work with the Executive Coordinator to coordinate the budgeting and reallocation process, based on requests/needs from the Coordinating Body and the rest of the organization

Development Lead

We are thrilled to announce that SustainUS is searching for a Development Lead! This is a one-year, unpaid volunteer position. The Development Lead supports SustainUS leadership and programmatic teams with both foundation and grassroots fundraising. The Development Lead will coordinate grassroots fundraising efforts and will work with the Communications and Media Team to do outreach with grassroots fundraisers. The Development Lead also oversees the selection, application, and reporting processes for SustainUS grant funding opportunities. Specifically, the position facilitates the grant-writing process, oversees grant-related data entry, and manages relationships with funding organizations. The Development Lead will be mentored by one of our alumni or a member of the Board who has development experience, so don’t worry if you are not adept at all these processes! We see this as an opportunity to develop new skills while contributing essential work to a community of committed organizers, thinkers, and changemakers.

  • Passionate about and with a special knack for persuasive writing, big-picture-thinking, fundraising, and action-oriented research
  • Available 2-5 hours per week
  • An effective communicator who checks email and phone regularly
  • Interested in refining and using fundraising skills to support meaningful action for justice and sustainability
  • Committed to cultivating explicitly anti-racist and feminist spaces for working together, building power with most affected people and communities, and engaging self-transformation in pursuit of collective liberation.

Responsibilities:

  • Support SustainUS leadership and programs with their grassroots and institutional funder fundraising efforts
  • Coordinate grassroots fundraising efforts, including:
    • Organizing quarterly fundraising campaigns through Global Giving
    • Seeking out and managing relationships with individual grassroots funders and supporters
    • Ensuring timely “Thank You” notes for donations to the organization
    • Compiling fundraising data for individual donors
  • Coordinate foundation fundraising, including:
    • Bottom-lining the grant-writing processes
    • Overseeing the entry of grant funding data into Salesforce
    • Managing relationships with specific foundations and institutional funders
    • Working with Program Teams and the Treasurer to meet reporting requirements of funding organizations

Tech + Digital Lead

We are thrilled to announce that SustainUS is searching for a Tech + Digital Lead! This is a one-year, unpaid volunteer position. The Tech + Digital Lead bottom-lines all of the important backend technical components that allow SustainUS to function as a distributed organization. As such, the Tech + Digital Lead is critical in supporting new SustainUS members in effectively engaging with the organization. The Tech + Digital lead sets up new members with email addresses, adds them to the SustainUS slack, helps new members navigate our google drive, and gives members access to editing the website and our action network tools. The Tech + Digital Lead will also work closely with the Community Building and Partnerships Team to determine how to use SustainUS Tech + Digital tools to increase engagement across the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain internal communications systems (Slack, listservs)
  • Support the rest of the organization in using our tech tools
  • Maintain and updates our website (WordPress)
  • Maintain Action Network and Google Apps (including Calendars)
  • Maintain and update our Google Drive
  • Maintain our outreach and recruitment spreadsheets.
  • Keep track of all our account logins and other documentation
