Citizen Science 2007: Alex Mizenko

Alex Mizenko, 15, is a sophomore at Toms River High School South and resides in Beachwood, his hometown. He has one sibling, Jessica, aged 30. His interest in atmospheric science began at age of 4 so when he became a sophomore, he entered the Authentic Science Research, a three year research course, where students study a topic of their choosing. He started studying tropical weather and climate change. He became interested in global warming's effect on New York City after reading an article about this problem. In December, Alex was accepted into the Hurricane's Outreach Program Educating Scientists (HOPES) program. This is a mentoring program sponsored by NBC 10 News in Bala Cynwyd, PA and it is run by its' chief meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz. Alex would like to become a meteorologist in the private sector and hopes to attend Pennsylvania State University. He is deeply honored to have been selected as a 2007 "Citizen Scientist." He would like to thank his teacher, Mrs. Girtain, his parents, and his friends for their support of his work.
