For the 3rd year in a row, starting with it's founding, we participated in the Clinton Global Initiative University program, held this year at the University of Miami April 16-18. SustainUS was first honored by CGI U through a student commitment made by Chair Kyle Gracey. In 2009 and 2010, we were invited back as a youth nongovernmental organization (NGO) for our work involving youth in sustainable development.

This year, our Commitment to Action focused on supporting projects of our members, including Alli Reed and the Berkeley Student Food Collective, and Mary Lemmer and her Build Up! sustainable housing project.

Copenhagen climate negotiations delegate Marielle Remillard and Commission for Sustainable Development 17 delegate Matt Severson also attended as student commitment makers.

We were pleased to help the University of Chicago's Center for International Studies with their skill building workshop for Global Classrooms/Model United Nations high school teachers in Chicago public schools. Chair Kyle Gracey helped teachers preparing their classes to compete as representatives of the World Food Program, discussing biofuels policies, as well as those preparing for simulations of the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

UNFCCC logoThe next meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change runs from Friday, April 9th to Sunday, April 11th, and SustainUS is there!  Partnerships Coordinator Juan Soriano will be on-site as part of the international youth climate movement participating in the talks, which will decide the negotiating structure and dates for the rest of the year.

We're sponsoring a side event on Friday night from 19:45-21:15 (Central European Time) on intergenerational decision-making. The event is organized by the European Youth Forum. Join us also on Saturday night at the same time for a side event on youth participation in the UNFCCC negotiations, sponsored by Service Civil International.
